As a municipal manager, Alex was most recently the Town Manager of Hanover New Hampshire, where he implemented a wide range of regionally recognized successful programs ranging from staff recruitment/retention, community/economic development, financial and capital planning, public engagement, technology, shared services, college and institutional partnerships, and more.

Previously, Alex served as the Business Administrator for the City of Lambertville and the Borough Administrator for the Borough of Leonia. Alex was elected Mayor (Village President) of his hometown of South Orange, New Jersey in 2011 (by 12 votes), which at 23 years-old, made him one of the youngest mayors in the United States, CEO to a $33.5m organization.

As an educator, Alex taught as a visiting professor of governance and technology at Seton Hall University in their Master of Public Administration program starting in 2013. The core-credit course touched on evolutionary biology, consciousness, attention, project planning, and management practices and helped students identify and create plans to tackle their most passionate goals.

As a consultant, Alex has worked on a wide range of projects that have helped nonprofits and governments reach their goals through more effective audience/community engagement.

Prior to founding Rethink Local, other examples of Alex’s consulting work include designing and implementing a pilot civics curriculum for Unity Charter School in Morristown, NJ for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders; serving as Sustainable Jersey‘s consulting Program Manager for the Public Information and Engagement Program, which provided technical assistance to four municipalities to help them improve their communications and technology programs, and designing and implementing the nationwide bipartisan leadership development program Pathways for the nonprofit Run for America.

As an entrepreneur, Alex founded and was a managing partner of Veracity Media, a nonpartisan digital and management strategies consulting firm that worked with candidates, nonprofits, and business to help them achieve their mission and vision. From starting the company himself in 2009 from selling it in 2015 with nearly ten employees, Veracity Media worked with nearly 100 political campaigns, nonprofits and companies, with clients such as Airbnb, Simon and Schuster, and dozens of state legislative, congressional, gubernatorial, and local races across the country. Though Alex will tell you that his first business was “The Tennis Guru,” which he founded when he was 15 years-old and provided tennis lessons, racquet restringing and wholesaling of tennis equipment.

As a student, Alex earned his Master of Public Administration in Emergency Management from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and his BA in the Political Science of American Law from Hampshire College. Alex holds an NREMT license as an Emergency Medical Technician, a ham radio Technician license from the Federal Communications Commission, is a certified Master Ecologist from Duke Farms, and loves learning in a wide range of fields.

As a writer, Beyond keeping a blog and Substack, Alex has published a number of popular articles in ICMA’s Public Management magazine, such as leadership lessons that we can learn from Coach Ted Lasso, and public engagement strategies for towns. Alex also writes and hopes to eventually publish his “hard” speculative/science-fiction stories that he started writing in 2020.

As a human being, Alex has also taught environmental education at Fairview Lake YMCA, volunteered as an Emergency Medical Technician with the South Orange Rescue Squad, served as South Orange’s Emergency Management Director while in office through storms such as Hurricanes Sandy and Irene, and has mentored and advised dozens of political candidates, entrepreneurs, and organizations.

Alex has traveled to over 30 states and a dozen countries, and is avid lover of the outdoors, nature, reading, writing, music, science-fiction, philosophy, photography, and all things local.
