Talking our political future at the “New Hampshire Citizens Assembly”

Organized by The People and NH Together, Alex joined a weekend of facilitated discussion about the future of our democracy and civic engagement in New Hamsphire at St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire on June 21st – June 23rd.

The event featured various state and local officials, experts, and delegates – about 50 New Hampshire residents making up a wide variety of backgrounds that closely mirrors the state itself.

The weekend was carefully facilitated, and through that intentional structure came significant areas of agreement, even among people with varied political ideologies and backgrounds who are frustrated with the lack of accessibility and representation of many levels of government today.

Alex commented “So many Americans want spaces where they have real meaningful conversations with people from different backgrounds. But most of our ‘spaces’ today are not designed to be constructive, and many of them, especially social networks driven by advertising revenue, are specifically designed in ways that create division. Kudos to all for fleshing out great proposals on issues ranging from primaries, to term limits, to making voting more accessible.” Alex added, “One of the highlights was meeting fellow Columbia High School Alum Andrew Shue, who founded The People, and grew up some years before me on the very same street in South Orange!”
